The Location
The Schleswig-Holstein capital of Kiel is the unchallenged gateway to the Baltic Sea. The direct connection to the North Sea - Baltic Canal, which is known internationally as the “Kiel Canal”, provides the shortest
link to the world’s oceans. On the international yachting scene, Kiel has made a name for itself through its growing importance as a cruise harbor, as the scene of the Kiel Week, as the Volvo Ocean Race Harbor, through its highly developed shipyard industry, and as Kiel Sailing City.
Because of the lack of infrastructure, the state capital still does not play any relevant role as a harbor for mega-yachts. Yet the trend among this clientele is definitely fixed on new routes and regions. The German Baltic coast, short routes to Scandinavia, and completely new destinations to discover in the Baltic offer fantastic prospects if appropriate berths can be created. In the classic regions such as the Caribbean or Florida, the effects of global climate change are manifesting themselves in the form of an increasing danger of hurricanes or in the Mediterranean in the form of increasingly hot summer months. In the moderate climate of our latitudes, the effects are more pleasant.
